Sunset Park, Harvey Cedars, NJ
I missed the entire spring sailing season.
First, in April, I sprained my right ankle jumping up from my living room couch. Second, the weather was cold and rainy practically every weekend from April through July. Not a good combination.
So, on to summer! Today was a beautiful day and, better, a windy afternoon. West wind, peaking in the high teens. Sailing over the east edge of the cove, I could feel a wall of cool ocean air, but it just sat there.
Lot's of good BAFing. Body out of shape, but loving every strain.
After a good couple hours of sailing, I saw a couple who who were trying to sail. Rather, the boy teaching his girl in way too much wind, with too much sail (5.5) with too little board (a narrow 274). Disaster in the making. I went over and loaned them my board for a while -- got the girl to get comfortable "walking the board." Jack Bushko got over being disgusted with the guy's total lack of sense in the situation and loaned them a HiFly Primo. So, after an hour of toughing in out, the girl finally got a few short reaches in. She was determined, and that's what helped her. She looked happy; a candidate for getting The Bug. Could have been much worse.
I just can't find my daggerboard. I think I may have left it in Islamorada, which really ticks me off because there was no reason it should have been there in the first place. Jack loaned me a daggerboard; we chatted and he said that the spring wasn't so hot anyway and that I shouldn't feel too bad about missing sailing it. He told me that he had torn his Achilles tendon getting into his truck. So I guess this spring was just no good. No ABK clinic here this year, either. ABK is under new management (Andy Brandt now owns the company) and I guess he's shifting things to Lakes Bay and the Hamptons).
It was a good day to plane the cove. I thought the sail might be too flat, but when I let out the outhaul it just buzzed, so flat was better. My technique is just so sloppy. Must take lesson!
