Kanaha Beach Park, Maui
An epic day for me. Probably a boring day for real Maui sailors.
In the middle of week-long family vacation in Ka'anapali, I snuck off for a day of windsurfing at Kanaha, I believe it was a Tuesday. Of course, this was the only day all week there was not 20 knot winds. More like, say, 7. Sheesh.
But, what the heck. I want to sail Maui. I never have. So, I book a lesson with Alan Cadiz's at HST. Since I initially said I wanted to work waterstarts, the lesson booking girl discouraged me. But I persist. Gimme a longboard, there's always something to learn.
It's just breathtaking beautiful at Kanaha. My instructor is an older guy, 50ish. He says, hey, not that much wind. I say, then just sail with me. I've never sailed in the ocean, just get me through the waves and it'll be worth it. Mostly, he's just being my paid sailing buddy/lifeguard.
And that's what we did. He shows me how to launch through the (very small) shorebreak. We BAF about. He takes me up and down the waves. Shows me (by example, since he's sailing out ahead of me) how to angle up and down swells that are a few feet high. This is so, so cool.
There's nobody else sailing -- there's just not enough wind for Maui folks. But so what? I had a great time.
I sailed Maui!! I sailed in the ocean! I launched between waves! I sailed over swells. Woo hoo!!!
Now I can die happy.
